True vintage rewards a careful eye. Here is how to read labels, seams and fabrics so you can tell the real thing from a modern reproduction.
Vintage clothing has never been more popular, and with popularity comes a flood of pieces described as "vintage" that are nothing of the sort. Learning to read the details lets you buy with confidence and pay a fair price for the real thing.
Start with the label
The care label is your first clue. Standardised washing symbols only became common in Britain from the 1970s, so a garment with no care symbols and a simple woven brand tag is often older than one covered in laundry instructions. Union tags, half sizes and "made in England" wording all point towards an earlier decade.
Check the construction
Turn the garment inside out. Older pieces frequently use metal zips, bound or pinked seams and generous hems left for altering. Overlocked edges on every seam and a plastic zip usually signal a more modern make. None of these are absolute, but together they build a picture.
A quick checklist to run through before you commit:
- Feel the fabric — natural fibres like wool, cotton and silk drape and crease differently to synthetics.
- Look for a metal zip, ideally with a maker mark on the pull.
- Inspect the seams for hand-finishing and a deep hem.
- Read the label for country of origin and old-style sizing.
If a seller cannot answer questions about age or provenance, that is not necessarily a red flag — many charity donations arrive with no history at all — but it does mean the evidence in the garment itself matters even more.
