One of the joys of buying preloved furniture is that you need not accept it as you find it. A weekend, a little effort and a few inexpensive materials can transform a tired piece into something you are proud to have in the house.
Start with a solid piece
Upcycling works best on furniture that is fundamentally sound. Solid wood, sturdy joints and good bones will reward your effort; a flimsy, delaminating cabinet rarely does. Choose your starting point wisely and the work is half done.

If you are looking for a place to begin, any of these make a satisfying weekend:
- Sand and oil a scratched wooden tabletop back to life.
- Paint a dated chest of drawers and swap the handles.
- Reupholster a tired dining-chair seat pad.
- Wax and buff a dry, dull sideboard.
- Line the drawers of an old desk with patterned paper.
Work in a ventilated space, follow the instructions on any product you use, and give each coat proper time to dry. Patience is the single biggest difference between a finish that looks professional and one that does not.
